Interested in discovering your family tree – We can help you

Phillip Island And District Genealogical Society PIADGS researches family histories for residents of Cowes, Phillip Island and the nearby districts around Bass Coast shire. We show people how to do it themselves. We undertake commissioned work from those who can’t do it themselves.

Nestled in the Newhaven, the Phillip Island and District Genealogical Society PIADGS is a vital hub for those curious about their ancestry and the rich tapestry of local history. Whether you’re a seasoned genealogist or just starting your journey to trace your family tree, this passionate and welcoming group offers a wealth of resources, support, and inspiration.

Founded by a group of dedicated volunteers, the society aims to preserve, promote, and make accessible the history of Phillip Island and its surrounding districts. Members enjoy access to an impressive collection of local historical records, family histories, newspapers, photographs, and cemetery registers, alongside national and international databases. Their research centre provides a quiet, supportive space to dig into archival material, with friendly volunteers always on hand to assist.

Phillip Island and District Genealogical Society PIADGS standout features is its commitment to local heritage. Volunteers have worked tirelessly to transcribe headstones, digitise records, and document family stories that might otherwise be lost to time.

Visitors to Phillip Island often drop in for assistance in tracking down long-lost relatives or uncovering stories of early settlers. It’s not unusual for people to leave with new connections, both familial and social, and a deeper appreciation of the area’s pioneering past.

We welcome new members of all ages and experience levels. which offers access to an ever-growing archive, helpful guidance, and a chance to contribute to the preservation of the region’s history.

Whether your ancestors arrived on the first ships to Victoria or you’re simply curious about the stories that shaped the Bass Coast, the Phillip Island and District Genealogical Society is a treasure trove of knowledge and connection. It’s a place where history comes alive—and where your own story just might begin.

Our purpose of this society is “to promote, foster and practice all aspects of genealogical study”.
