A Phillip island-based charity supporting the education of Cambodian children

The organization Growing Cambodia, based in Phillip Island, is dedicated to helping children in rural Cambodian villages by providing support for English education programs in four schools. For more information, please visit the website or contact them at 0409 167 001.

Can you help us?

We are keen to enter into partnerships with more local businesses. This is a great way for a business to give back and to involve their staff in a very worthwhile endeavour. Please reach out to our Founder & Chair Stephen Davie at steve@growingcambodia.org.au. He would love to buy you a coffee and tell you more about the work of Growing Cambodia

There are over 1000 children who benefit from our English teaching programs and the provision of teaching materials and supplies. Three of these villages now have additional access to clean drinking water and other health programs have recently been introduced which have a direct impact on others living in the villages.

Cambodia is a beautiful but challenged country. Its future lies with its younger generation. Children who can speak, read and write English give themselves a better opportunity to gain employment and therefore provide long-term security for themselves and their family.

With the teaching programs provided by Growing Cambodia, children are encouraged to learn English as one means of trying to break the poverty cycle.

We believe our model is very cost effective and we can positively impact the lives of many more children and families if we were to raise additional funds. The impact will be gradual but will have long term benefits, for not only the villages but Cambodia country itself.

Growing Cambodia has grown from a handful of Phillip Island volunteers in 2012 to a well- known and well- supported Island based organisation in 2025. We also have a growing  support base in Melbourne and beyond, as more people hear about our organisation through family and friends and/or from people who have travelled to Cambodia as a volunteer. Without the support of individuals and businesses on Phillip Island we could not continue to support these children.

Key outcomes of Growing Cambodia to date have been:

  • The increasing number of children in rural Cambodian villages wanting to learn English and now having an opportunity to do so – the number has increased from 5 children in 2012 to over 1000 today
  • Scholarships for 60 children who without our assistance would have been left ithout an education as their families could not afford to send them to a government school
  • The provision of university sponsorships to allow our students to progress to university.
  • The employment of local teachers and managers which in turn has helped both their families and the local economy
  • Well over 100 people travelling to Cambodia to donate their time as volunteers and provide assistance in delivering our programs.
  • The introduction of new programs such as the delivery of maternal and children health
  • Supporting the provision of sustainable feminine hygiene solutions, which means young women can now go to school every day of the month
  • A partnership with another local NGO, & to supply soap to our schools and villages
  • Supporting the local medical centre at Koy Meng

All of Growing Cambodia funds raised from the community are spent in providing teaching programs, including materials, and allied programs. There are no administrative costs, all administration work in Australia is performed by our volunteers.

Growing Cambodia is run by a dedicated board, the Growing Cambodia Committee, which comprises 10 dedicated volunteers, the majority of whom are based on or associated with Phillip Island. We have DGR status so all donations to Growing Cambodia are tax deductible.

Join our fund raising efforts to continue to support these young people to take the 1st step in a better education.
